This act aims to build on the previously defined territorial waters in the Cramer-John Oceanic Act.
The Cramer-John Oceanic Act stipulates that a nationโs territorial waters is established as 50 miles from its coastline. Therefore, if a nation owns two adjacent territories which are 100 miles across the sea from each other or less, said nation effectively has contiguous territorial waters and may enforce its regulations across the entire waterway. However, many nations, including myself, have multiple adjacent territories which only narrowly do not qualify for this 100-mile threshold. This poses a national security risk as foreign naval vessels may decide to encamp themselves in these narrow strips of international waters and disrupt the movement of domestic vessels between the two adjacent territories.
I propose that any nation with adjacent territories or possessions that are 150 miles or less from each otherโs coastlines maybe be able to extend its territorial waters up to the remaining 50 miles (or less) to ensure that it can possess contiguous territorial waters between the two territories.
