Deep in the woods on the outskirts of Medžske, Vyerlatsk Oblast, were two identical huts. In one hut was Karina and her family. The second was occupied by Nena Juana and her family.
Numerous guests were outside, many dressed in traditional outfits, including members of the Presidential Security Service.
Inside the first hut, Karina sat patiently in front of a mirror. She watched as her older sister, Larysa, finished braiding her hair.
"There, done," Larysa said.
Karina's two younger sisters then added the floral crown, completing her hand-made traditional wedding dress. Karina had spent many nights embroidering the dress herself herself. She stood and inspected herself in the mirror, even doing a slow twirl, and couldn't help but smile.
Her mother, standing behind the sisters, beamed with pride. "It reminds me of my wedding with your dad. He would be so proud of you," she said.
"Thank you, mother," Karina replied.
"Speaking of weddings, Larysa..."
"Mother, we've had this conversation before," she replied. "I'm a fighter pilot, I don't have time for a marriage."
"Your sister is the President, dochka (daughter). If she can find time for love, you can too."
The two younger sisters snickered.
"That goes for you two as well," their mother said. She turned back to Karina. "Did you bring the rushnyk?"
"Yes mom," Karina said, grabbing the white towel off the desk. It was embroidered in exquisite red needlework.
"Who knew the President was so good at embroidery," her mother joked. "Maybe if being President doesn't work out, you can sew for a living."
"Thanks, mom," Karina said as she rolled her eyes, a smile tugging at her lips.
"Larysa, go check to see if the other bride is ready," their mother said, folding up the rushnyk. "The ceremony starts soon."

Señora Nena Juana sat in a chair, staring at the mirror in her hut. She stared at herself in the mirror and began to cry.
"I never thought this day would come," she said. "And my mother isn't even here, she's in Voxmire! I can't believe her. She knew she could find a way to try and ruin my day!"
Nena and her mother have a strained relationship, as is well known in New Bradfordsburg's tabloids. Stories dared to say that Nena Juana was spoiled, and a brat. All the while, her own family saw the truth. Samantha of Ivy, Nena's mother, was a self-consumed narcissist, who loathed her daughter for siding with her father during their messy divorce years ago.
"Nena, family is so complicated, your mother -- I'm just sorry," said Bradford John, rushing to hug Nena.
Bradford John stood in front of Nena and held her shoulders, looked her in the eye, and said "Nena, I'm going to tell you something. Promise not to repeat it?"
Nena looked up. She sniffed and wiped her tears. "What is it?" she asked.
"Your mother is a total asshole, and everyone knows it."
Nena laughed, for the first time all day. Bradford John hugged her again. "You look gorgeous. This is your day. We're not going to let anyone take that away."
A security detail then spoke up. "It's time to move to your seat," the detail said to Bradford John. "I'll see you out there kid."
Bradford John looked at Nena's friends, who were all there too. "You all make sure to keep her mother out of this room. I know she's in Voxmire, but we gotta keep her out of this room, if you know what I mean."
Nena's friends nodded in agreement and Larysa arrived to check on Nena. Nena's friends held Larysa up at the door while Nena's best friend helped her to cover up the evidence that she was crying. When Larysa saw Nena, Nena was ready. She had a strong look on her face. A determined one, that only highlighted her beauty.
"Fuck my mom," she thought. "My day is god damn right. Let's do this."
