THE CHANCELLERY
Vienna
At around three in the morning Chancellor Acwulf Schulz sat quietly in his office inside the Chancellery in Vienna, frustrated yet determined. He told his senior assistant to hold all calls and to clear his schedule early the morning before and after what he has called his own failure. But there was one person he allowed into his office, one person who he knew would give him the advice he needed to hear: Intelligence Minister Angelina Fromm, the woman who has been the intelligence chief for forty-one years.

Chancellor Schulz: “Angelina, what have I done? How could something I’ve given so much effort to end so badly?”
Minister Fromm: “You’ve always stood up and beside others, that’s the kind of country the Nationale Republik always has been. You made a mistake and regardless of what others out there may think, Acwulf, you’re not entirely to blame.”
Chancellor Schulz: “The buzzing going around Declansburg seems to be noising the opposite. Those we have trusted—who I’ve trusted—have abandoned us. After all I’ve done for those nations, and with one mishap…”
Minister Fromm: “No, quiet. Listen, the Continental Shield was tested beyond its limits. Choosing to attack three separate areas can put strain on any organization, that was their plan and… and the world will hopefully see if that way going forward. Others will blame you, but you still prevailed.”
Chancellor Schulz: “Prevailed?”
Minister Fromm: “Yes, you tried something. You gave it your all. But it didn’t work out, and you’ll try something else, Acwulf. You always persevered out there on the soccer field and you will persevere, again, right here in one of the most powerful offices in the world. They’re looking to you to be strong, to stand tall. This is not a loss but a chance to do something else.”
Chancellor Schulz: “You’re right, I mustn’t give up. I just never planned it like this and hope with every fiber of my being that the respect I’ve lost is regained.”
Minister Fromm: “Of course I’m right. I’ve been here for forty-one years and you’re just a 26-year old brat who just so happens to be my boss, but you are a smart brat. Let those who see you as something different now think about all the good you’ve done despite this. You have done much more good than this one setback. Now, pick yourself back up.”
Chancellor Schulz: “Thank you, Angelina. Your council is just what I needed to hear. The Nationale Republik will come back better.”
Minister Fromm: “Damn straight it will. You’ll get back in their good graces, they know who you really are; good and decent, honest and unyielding.”
