Her name was Junji, and she served the Emperor. She worked for the state but served the Emperor like everyone else. You always worked for something in Jesia, whether it be a megacorporation or the military, but everyone, from the lowest forms of scum on the bottom of the boots of the tyrannical, to the men destined to change the world with their intellect and influence, served the Emperor. Divine and immortal they believed him to be, the physical presence of their God. He was beyond the state or nation. He was above all.
Junji was the head of the ministry of security. She secured the borders of Jesia, making sure no one went out or went in, hiding and masking the presence of the island-nation against the world outside. They wanted to be a one-way window, not to be seen but to see all. She was summoned to the Imperial Palace, where the Emperor resided. The Emperor never left the palace, this is where he will remain all of his life.
The actual palace was hidden from sight. It was surrounded by a monolith of steel and concrete. Its sheer size dwarfed the largest skyscrapers in Jesia. There was no beginning or end to it, no way to know where to enter and where to leave. A horrifying structure only fit for a god. She entered the building through one of the many helipads on the outside, and she made her way to the center of the monolith. So massive that small rail lines were needed to traverse distances. Inside, operated many important structures that kept Jesia up. The military operated from here, many of the largest corporations in Jesia have headquarters here. The priests that upheld Jesian society resided here, and many pilgrims from all around the island traversed here to bask in the holy presence of the divine Emperor. In the center of it all, in the deep dark heart of the monolith resided the Imperial Palace. It was given its massive room, the size of a small town. Its ceiling reached the sky, where it was impossible to tell if it was real or not. It was given its sunlight, it was given its fresh air. It was a beautiful artificial recreation of tranquility. Perhaps some of the last of its kind, pink leafed trees swayed in the artificial wind, the sound of the stream was quiet and peaceful. The center consisted of a structure, architecture ancient in comparison to the out terrier. It was detailed and made of wood and stone, white with a curved tile roof. Simple, yet in compassion to the outside world, it was an anomaly from an era unrecognizable.
Junji walked inside the palace, the environment was eerie and unfamiliar yet calming and tranquil. She walked through the clean empty rooms, with magnificent artwork decorating the walls. She made it to the room…. The room where he presided. It had no name, it was simply a room. Empty except for a throne against the wall where the sun rose. She walked into the center of the room, bowed to the throne, and awaited a response.
“Hello there, and you Junji Akihino?” a voice said from the dark corners of the room
“Yes… my Emperor….” she said, a voice timid
“Relax, my child, you are safe. There are no worries to be held, relax and rise”
She rose from the bow, head still high and hands shaking. The Emperor was standing near the throne, in his white pastel robe, with a crown made of gold mysteriously and beautifully. The Emperor, his dark beard and tied back hair, spoke to Junji
“Relax and look forward. I have much to speak to you”
Junji did as the Emperor requested
“Good… now I have something to request of you….”
“Yes my Emperor, what is it you wish?”
“Would you be willing to accept the position of the foreign minister?” he said with a calm tone
“Hai….I shall…” she said, before pausing and realizing what he said. Foreign minister? What? Is this a dream?
“My emperor… if I may ask…. What do you mean by a foreign minister?” she asked hesitantly
The Emperor sat upon his throne and started to speak
“My father…. Ruled this land for many years. He continued the policy of isolation that so many of his ancient forefathers did as well. We had to live in fear of the dark surrounding us, the unknown of the outside world. It was until recently, as the rest of the world rose in power that we started to inch outside. First, we found the scraps and trash from the outside that washed up on our beaches. Tools and machines, with great power and majesty. We took what we had and learned from the scraps, but that wasn’t enough. Adventurers and criminals took to the outside islands and brought back the treasures they found. Gold wasn’t what they sought, but the inventions of the foreigners. Books and information brought us from the rice fields to the skyscrapers you see before your eyes today. That started over two hundred years ago, but we were too afraid yet again. We could’ve gone much farther if we had not been afraid. However, I had decided to change that….. Like Lord Akira during the creation of the universe, I will cast the light against the darkness that surrounds us and bring us prosperity like no other….my father was mistaken. Now that he has passed, and with me in the reigns of power, it is time for a change. Your job, your holy duty for the good of all, is to open Jesia to the other powers of the world, to show them our glory, and to interact and communicate with their states officially.”
Junji started to tear up, such a divine speech the Emperor has given up on her, this is the world of Lord Akira and she will not give it up.
“Hai! I shall my Emperor! I will devote myself to this and work until your wishes are met!”
“Go then… I shall start giving the orders to help you get off the ground, then you can take it from there. You shall work in hand with the state….”
