the midday sun shone down onto the half-equipped CDF soldiers, packed around a shoddy, ancient radio.
the speakers drawl and nasal tone of speaking combined with the crackling of the speaker made it hard to listen to. like nails dragging down a black board.
"there is no mixed consensus... on the matter of our housing. our education, healthcare, employment opportunity. they are lacking. it requires Cordonshur's greatest priority"
a few soldiers sneezed, and shifted their weight - but remained completely silent... for they were listening to Moshe Bachar, the Prime Minister of Cordonshur.
"this recent wave in ghetto riots shows this -" by now a small number hung around the barbed wire fence, listening to his words with intent. it was the first time he's spoken this summer. " - to me. centuries old inequity cannot be amended instantly. however, my fellow Cordonshurians, change is coming. a great social rebuilding is needed. it is practically imperative. while violent riots break out across out country, i know this is not of the majorities will. they loot, pillage and murder. the fact of the matter is that law and order has broken down in our cities. self-interested barbarians run on the streets of Atil."
the crowd clinging onto the barbed wire grew louder and louder. whispers, curses and concerned glances from the CDF as their hands drift towards their triggers.
they were in Atil.
"murder and pillaging have nothing to do with your noble quest of civil rights. it is the conduct of criminals. The Central Government has no choice presented to them but to respond. i know Cordonshurians and Khazarites in our cities and in our fields alike will be shocked and outraged by them. and that is why I have authorized martial law tonight in the city for a period of two weeks, or otherwise if the riots are controlled by then..."
the radio crackled out of the shouts and jeers by the Khazarites rustling the wire fence. CDF soldiers crush fingers with their rifle butts as they smack them against the fence, barking back for them to get back. some grabbed soldiers against the fences, spitting pent up rage right into their faces.
and then a shot rang out.
the crowd bolted like lighting from the fence as the CDF hastily fired their assault rifles into the crowd without thinking at their supposed assailant - but before the scream of "Hold Fire!" came, the damage had already been done.
and at the end of the day seven bodies lay by the fence.
