The history of Dengria.
Dengria begins its history in the year 300, relatively late when compared to other nations, as a small collection of city states that eventually united in 346 to form the “Kingdom of Dengria”. This kingdom encompassed the regions of nowadays Roxada,Dengrunia,Norbelia and Lagyparia. Life wasn’t easy in the Dengrian kingdom however as towns often got raided by nomadic tribes that still lived south of Lagyparia.
In the year 357 the Dengrian king which we have the oldest records of known as “King Fribamus the first” started a campaign of conquest of the southern territories kicking out the nomads and adding to the Kingdom the lands of nowaday’s Native reserves and Firidon.
This however was not appreciated by the kingdom of Ryumane which had recently been formed in 350 by a group of nomads which claimed Firidon was its rightful home.
Because of this dispute the Dengrian kingdom and the Ryumanian kingdom started a war which lasted until around 358 when they both got ransacked and destroyed by a huge horde-like empire which we don’t know much of.
Dengria would reappear again as a small kingdom in 1311 after obtaining its independence from the kingdom of Wastaria (nowaday’s Wastonia and Wastdon). This marks the beginning of the era of “The Old Kingdom”. The small kingdom went to war again with the kingdom of Wastaria in 1320 and, thanks to their king at the time, Philip the second, they were able to win many battles and secure Norbelian territories in a peace deal with the Wastarians. The kingdom also became part of a union with the Kingdom of Rofnja (today’s southern Roxada and small parts of Staidear) officially making them the kingdom of Dengria-Rofjna.
This newly established kingdom annexed some more small kingdoms in 1333 such as the kingdom of Lagyparian Lakes to expand its territory all the the way to modern-day Firidon.
The double monarchy however did not last. The Dengrian and Rofjnan royal families were having a hard time staying together and soon Rofjna separated from Dengria entirely in 1335 leading to “The 12 years war”. The war against Rofjna was brutal, long and tiring but Dengria, although in shambles, came out victorious in 1347 and got all the lands of the Rofnjan Kingdom.
This massive Dengrian Empire was now facing an old rival:The Ryumanian empire which managed to reclaim its ancient land from Wastaria in 1343 and expanded its influence over the region.
The Dengrian and Ryumanian empire often had skirmishes or small battles often born by disagreements that would often decide who would gain lands, one of these battles was the infamous “Battle of Desranciera” when, in 1350, The Ryumanians defeated the Dengrians thanks to “the charge of the black knights” where many Ryumanian knights charged into the Dengrian lines, overwhelming them. For the first time in years the Ryumanian Empire won a battle bringing the Ryumanian population hope they would be victorious against Dengria if the conflict kept going.
Unfortunately that wasn’t the case because a plague known as “The Lake Flu” appeared in 1389 and it decimated the Ryumanian and parts of Dengria’s population forcing the honourable conflicts to come to an end momentarily.
The ryumanians however did not make it out of their crisis and soon the kingdom of Wastaria reclaimed its lost lands along with a brand new “kingdom of Karafia” (stretching from the region of Karafia to Garania) appearing in the southern parts of the region. That’s how Dengria remained for most of its history, a fractured mess of different peoples that shared the same region and somewhat similar cultures until, in 1489 it was annexed by a huge empire which encompasses territories that nowadays go from Severia to the Dengrian border of Staidear.
In 1589 however, this huge empire collapsed making Dengria independent again together with its previous neighbours and members of the Dengrian regions: Wastaria, Karafia and Ryumane.
This marks the beginning of “The New Kingdom”. An era in Dengrian history which sees Dengria attempt unification with other members of the region as well as pushing away invaders.
The first issue this new kingdom had to face was a group of peoples in south Lagyparia which had remained in a tribal-like organisation descendant from the old south lagyparian nomadic tribes which did not share the same culture as Dengrians and refused to adapt to the state’s demands and did not pay taxes or obeyed their laws. The Dengrian King at the time, Thomas the second, resolved this by some treaties in 1598 made with the various tribe’s leaders which, in return for keeping a region for the tribes to remain and hunt, had to pay tributes and obey the laws of the king.
The next issue king Thomas had to resolve was the rise of Wastaria as a regional power that seeked to get back its older Dengrian lands. Wastaria had already, in 1597, annexed Ryumane completely and now wanted to take back the lands of Norbelia.
The king decided that, before they get too powerful, they should invade them and take them down once and for all to unite most of the region. This however wasn’t possible as they did not have the strength to take them down. So, it was decided that a deal would be made with Karafia: If they helped Dengria take down Wastaria they would receive the lands of Firidon. This was a tough decision for the king to make as the Firidian lands have been inhabited by Dengrians for centuries and giving them up like this would be a massive loss.
The king had a plan in mind however: after defeating Wastaria they would simply refuse to give the lands to Karafia.
This might seem like a bad decision, after all it would be hurting the credibility and prestige of the kingdom, but Thomas knew the Karafians did not have any allies to call upon or sympathisers that would help them.
The war against Wastaria begun shortly after this deal in 1610.
The war brought destruction in the whole region: both sides suffered enourmous casualties and the Karafians almost lost due to an offensive from the wastarians.
The Dengrian forces however, entering the Wastarian capital after 4 years of brutal conflict, forced the Wastarian king to surrender its lands to Dengria.
King Thomas however had died before this peace treaty due to a stroke and his heir, King Julius the first, took his place.
He annexed the entirety of the Wastarian lands, from Wastonia to Ryumane.
He did not however keep Firidon as his father would have done, he gave it to Karafia, knowing that Dengria would one day be able to get it back, after all, Karafia did not have anyone they could call upon if they were invaded.
And that plan came to fruition after 70 years of stability and peace in the region when the Dengrian king at the time, Julius the third, Declared war and annexed the regions of Karafia, finally unifying all of Dengria under his rule.
The peoples that were conquered during Dengria’s history didn’t really have reasons to rebel, they had a stable country that didn’t demand many tributes/taxes and that provided new services and infrastructure to the regions.
The kingdom had however fought some wars against foreign powers during these times:The Dengrian war of Retnica of 1842, a war that was fought between Dengria and the Republic of Retnica, the front was mostly Ryumanian territory which saw many disgusting hand to hand fights due to the rough terrain that made it easy for the enemy to ambush the Dengrians with their bayonets and muskets.
The war was won by Dengria in 1844 but they didn’t have claims on any of the Retnican territories and they didn’t want any, so instead they chose to make them become a kingdom again.
The other conflict they fought in those times was the Ryumanian war of independence in 1849 organised by a Ryumanian rebel group probably funded by one of Dengria’s rivals at the time because not many in the region desired independence.
Still, this war devastated the Ryumanian territory even more and, despite a quick Dengrian victory in 1890, it had devastating consequences on the unity of the region.
Dengria would then remain in a period of turmoil as many different regions, all desiring to rule themselves, wanted to secede from Dengria.
The kingdom however managed to maintain its power over the territories as it heavily invested in crushing oppositions and giving infrastructure and goods to the poorer regions.
After the period of instability followed a period of relative peace and prosperity as Dengria held a referendum in 1919 so that the Dengrian people could choose between retaining a monarch or becoming a Democratic Republic.
Dengria would become a Federal Republic some time after the referendum was over in 1920, its regions now states with different historical backgrounds but all united under the banner of Dengria in a peaceful union. “Long live the Dengrian people and the Republic!” shouted citizens in the streets. The royal family was deposed from power and allowed to live on as Dengrian citizens despite loyalists wanting them to retain atleast a representative image for the country.
And so lived on Dengria, a nation with a long history of wars now unified in a peaceful union of states.
“May the Dengrian tree shelter us from corruption and war, our dreams of unification finally have come true.”
